The Deferral Dilemma Revisted
Last week we took a look at a New York Times blog post that touched on the difficult situation facing students who receive word that they've been deferred by one of their top schools. This week the left coast is getting involved as the Los Angeles Times today weighed in on the same topic.
The California situation, however, is even more of a connundrum. There may of the public schools in the UC system are beginning to wait-list kids for the first time due to a variety of reasons including state budget cuts. This means that now you've got kids who are wait-listed by one UC school who may end up sending a deposit into another school in the same system, only to find they eventaully got into their school of choice.
It's like the analogy we made last week where your friend is being asked to remain "faithful" to a girl who doesn't yet know if she wants him, even though there's another perfectly good girl waiting in the wings. Except in this case the other girl is her sister. Sounds like an episode of Springer in the making. All in all it's an added dose of cruelty to a process which certainly does not need any.
