Life of Test Prep Pioneer Cut Tragically Short at 90

Stanley H. Kaplan, a hero here at BSATWorld, dropped dead Monday. Kaplan was the first person ever to disagree with the College Board and live to tell about it, at least until yesterday.

Back in 1939, when his last name kept him out of medical school, Kaplan single-handedly invented the college test prep industry. The College Board moved swiftly to shut him down, claiming that no amount of preparation could raise your SAT score. (Maybe not their scores--they're idiots.)

Fast forward to 1984, when Stanley sold Kaplan, Inc. to the Washington Post for $45 million. Smart move--today it's the only division that makes money and its influence continues to grow. Even lab animals use Kaplan review materials to prep for maze runs and drug trials. But it all started when Stanley Kaplan mooned the College Board back in the 40's. His story proves that staring down those assholes can lengthen your life.

We at the BSAT salute Mr. Kaplan and we're sorry he's dead. Without the industry he created, the BSAT would make as little sense as dividing by zero on a train that leaves Cleveland at 4:03 PM. RIP, Stan.
