The School that Would Love to Reject You
Well it appears our old buddies University of Chicago at the are at it again. This time noted in a Business Week article, for their work recruiting more applicants in an effort to bump their admissions statistics into line with those for institutions that have the type of students who care about (and can calculate sans TI-83+) their admissions statistics (read: Harvard). You may also remember the University of Chicago for their brief, and cute, love-letter essay controversy we featured here and here.
So, at first this whole lets get more people to apply so that we can reject more of them thought process seems a little disingenuous, wouldn't you think? But really, when you boil it down, it just seems inefficient. Why kick a bunch of money out to marketers to ramp up your admissions with advertising, when you could just kick five to ten bucks to each student who finishes your application anyway. It'd sort of soften the blow don't you think? Sorry you didn't get in, but here's some cash go grab a pizza.
Anyway, the science, metrics and marketing behind college admissions it's not really something I understand or care to understand. Especially not at these top tier schools I didn't have a prayer of getting into if I would have even tried. So, just let this stuff rattle around your brain a little bit, but don't get too shocked or appalled. And if the hypocrisy bums you out, just give me a call. I'll be wearing a cutoff lettermans jacket, dangling some poor freshman off a roof by his ankles and screaming "NEEEERRRRRRRDSSS!!!!" at the top of my lungs.
