Curing Senioritis One AP Test at a Time

Every now and then we at the BSAT come across an article on the topic of college admissions that acutally makes sense. It doens't happen often, but it did today when Karen Kasdin weighed in on the topic of "senioritis" from The Faster Times.

Kasdin's take is surprisingly refreshing, ignoring the widely held "keep working or your admission to college will be taken away!" viewpoint (brought to you by the same people making the dubious claim that broccoli is not only healthy but palatable) in favor of the rather obvious "take a deep breath and stay out of jail" approach. (Actually, in fairness, the "stay out of jail" part was my own editorializing she makes no such mention. And while it is generally a good maxim to follow, it might not be entirely necessary in this case.)

Of course there is only one sure cure method for avoiding senioritis, and it's one Kasdin does not touch on: underachieving in the first place. Indeed, if I were a parent (and I'm not) I would view senioritis as a positive step, a confirmation of my child's previous efforts exerted to achieve at their true ability level. If they don't get worse when they're not trying there's a big chance they were a total fuck up to begin with.

And while "senioritis" probably shouldn't mean not showing up to school entirely for a period of a few months, or keying your math teachers car because you feel like it, it is good to know that there are responsible adults out there who'd advise you to re-double your efforts toward a two-month period of takin it easy.
